Love Titirangi
Love Titirangi is a community organisation started in January 2017 with the aim of making our village of Titirangi plastic bag free. We launched in July 2017 with amazing support from all the businesses in the village, and have been really impressed by how the community has come together to solve this issue. We estimate that we’ve collectively sewn around 2,000 bags, some of which are still circulating in the community. Only two takeaway businesses in the village still use plastic bags, and we hear stories of people not feeling they can walk through the village with a plastic bag anyway! We were also instrumental in the national campaign against plastic bags, and were thrilled when Jacinda’s government banned plastic bags in New Zealand. Woohoo!
We followed up the success of that campaign with the launch of a CupCycling campaign in October 2018, with the aim of reducing disposable coffee cups in the community by promoting beautifully designed re-usable cups. Six cafes are involved, and we’ve already saved thousands of disposable cups from landfill.
We’re now wondering what to tackle next…
