Bundeena Maianbar
Bundeena and Maianbar are neighbouring villages in Royal National Park, south of Sydney on the southern shore of Port Hacking. Bundeena has a population of about 1300, Maianbar about 600. We are twin villages – same parentage, different personalities. Tourism destination as well as artist enclave. Living so close to wilderness means we are very protective of the environment.
We meet weekly to sew for a few hours (or iron, or sort fabric, or screen print). We have a Borrow and Bring Back box in three shops (including Maianbar’s only shop). Although we have put in over 3,000 bags, most do not come back. However, enough bags do get put into the box that we are keeping going and the community is learning. We have a lot of Bought to Support bags – several of our sewers are skilled quilters and love to play! With the money we raise, we pay for an annual Sustainability Expo in Bundeena.
